Food enthusiasts are welcomed to try out newly opened “The Little Nyonya Cuisine” a restaurant that specializes in Penang Peranakan cuisines.

The grand opening was held last Saturday, 7th of August 2011, and was graced by YB Danny Law Heng Kiang, EXCO for Tourism Development & Culture Penang and popular TV personality Jason Yeoh (Axian) from Axian’s Food Adventures.

This ‘kopitiam’ styled restaurant serves affordable and Halal Peranakan cuisines that ranges from RM 10 to RM 40 per dish, available in both ala carte and set menus. For starters, one can try the restaurant’s speciality, Nyonya Otak Beancurd (RM12) per plate or Chicken Satay (RM 9.80)

Some suggestions for main course includes Claypot Nyonya Curry Fish Head (princes ranges depending on size of fish) and Stir Fried Nyonya Squid (RM16). The traditional Peranakan Pengat Pisang (RM3.50) is a must try for desert, as it is rarely served in Penang restaurants.

The origins of the Peranakans, also known as Baba & Nyonya can be traced back to centuries ago when the Chinese immigrated from China to the British Straits Settlements of Melaka, Singapore and Penang. Their distinct background blended harmoniously with the local customs, through mixed marriages and assimilations.

The Peranakan cuisine is as unique as its culture. According to Axian, the Penang Peranakan cuisine differs slightly from its cousins in Singapore and Melaka. In Penang, the dishes are sourish and slightly on the spicy side whereas in Singapore and Melaka, the dishes are often sweet. This is because the Penang Peranakan cuisines are largely influenced by Thai dishes and their preparation style.

If you wish to experience the local Peranakan cuisines, do try out this new restaurant. For more information, please contact The Little Nyonya Cuisine at 04-227 0694.
